High school seniors Anna Leigh Martin of Pickens and Andrew Cobb of Anderson recently returned from Washington, D.C. where they joined over 1,500 high school students from across the country who participated in the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour held June 12-17. Sponsored by Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative, the youth were selected for the trip based upon a written application, as well as a personal interview.
Each year in June, this action-filled week in D.C. provides high school students with opportunities to learn first-hand what it is like to be involved in politics, community service and today's social issues. Highlights for the youth included meeting with their elected representatives in the U.S. House and Senate at our nation's Capitol to discuss the process of government and issues of the day. On National Youth Day, featured speakers provided insight to the important roles that electric cooperatives play in local communities. In addition to visiting the Capitol, the South Carolina group also visited historic landmarks such as the White House, Arlington Cemetery, Mount Vernon, the Washington Monument and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
"We're very proud of the job that these young people did representing our organization in Washington," said Charles Dalton, Blue Ridge Electric Co-op's president and CEO. "I have no doubt that Anna Leigh and Andrew have been forever changed by the history they learned, the culture they absorbed and the new friends they met." Anna Leigh Martin attends Pickens High School and is the son of Larry and Susan Martin. Andrew Cobb, son of Tim and Pam Cobb, is a student at TL Hanna High School. Anna Leigh and Andrew are already leaders in their schools and their communities, and are to be congratulated on being chosen to participate in this fun-filled, educational week in Washington.
