 Surge Guard™ is a device installed on the outside of the home between the meter base and the meter to help protect your home electrically from lightning and power surges. Surge Guard gives you protection 24 hours a day as the unit is designed to help divert harmful surges to the ground before they enter your home. Surge Guard is not a substitute for lightening rods or other devices intended to protect people and property against direct or nearby lightning strikes. While it provides significant protection, Surge Guard does not provide complete protection from every possible voltage surge.
The cost of Surge Guard includes a one-time $30.00 installation fee and a $5 per month maintenance fee. ($5.80 per month for polyphase). Both will be billed to your electric bill. With the surge guard package, the customer will receive one-in-house single outlet protector valued at $20.00.
A Blue Ridge representative will install the device and measure your existing ground resistance and install a new ground rod with a cadwelded connection when you are not properly grounded.
Surge Guard program is only available to Blue Ridge members as Blue Ridge is not allowed to install surge protection equipment on another power company's meter.
A secondary line of defense, an outlet surge protector, is recommended and is for sale to the general public. In-house outlet protectors protect surges from damaging home equipment by entering through a telephone line or cable TV line. In-house accessories range from single outlet protectors to complex multiple outlet satellite and computer connections.
